Can't enter license, OK button disabled, key not accepted

A license key can be rejected by the software for one of the following reasons:

Misspelled user name and/or license key

To avoid misspellings, we recommend that you copy both the user name and license key from the license certificate e-mail rather than enter them manually in the software. You can do so by using the Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V shortcuts on Windows/Linux and Cmd+C/Cmd+V shortcuts on Mac.

You should be looking for this section inside the license certificate e-mail:

Run <PRODUCT NAME> and follow the Installation Wizard's instructions. To register for use of the software or change your existing registration details, go to Help/Register menu of the software and enter the included below the User Name and License Key(s) into the registration dialog:

User Name: COPY/PASTE THIS NAME
License Key: COPY/PASTE THIS KEY

Some products use 4-line keys in the following format:

You need to copy the entire key on 4 distinct lines. Some mail clients may remove the line breaks between these lines rendering the key invalid when pasted.

Offline activation key from JetBrains account is a single long line of characters. You can drag&drop .txt file downloaded from your account into the key text field.

  • Copy from the original e-mail view not modified by the mail client or other software (don't copy from a saved PDF).
  • LICENSE BEGIN/LICENSE END lines are optional and can be omitted when copying.
  • IntelliJ IDEA versions before 11.1.5 have a single line input field and will not work with 4-line license keys.
  • Key groups are separated with the minus symbol (-), some clients can automatically replace it with a dash making the key not valid.
  • OK button in the dialog will remain disabled until both the correct user name and the license key for the product are provided.

Wrong User Name

Please note that both the user name and license key are case-sensitive. Please make sure that you are using the user name which is specified in your license certificate email. If a license is registered in your company name, it will not work with your personal name.

No access to the original license e-mail

If you've lost the original license e-mail or you were not provided with this e-mail, please contact the sales team and we'll resend it.

A license key does not qualify for upgrade to a higher product version

If your license key does not work with the newly installed version of the software, please make sure that your current license key allows you to
upgrade for free to the latest version. If it does not, please contact sales in order to upgrade your license.

What to do if nothing helps

Don't panic! In some very rare cases license key can be generated for a name containing special Unicode characters that are not visible or cannot be correctly copy/pasted from the e-mail.

Contact support team by submitting a ticket with the original license certificate email and a screenshot of the IDE registration dialog displaying your user name and the license key in this dialog.

Using ultimate intelli-J 13 (which I love) on ubuntu, the usual ctrl-V paste shortcut did not work for me when entering my licence text. A colleague showed me that you can right-click over the entry field and then select paste, if the usual paste shortcut is not working for you. I've only had dramas with this when entering a replacement licence key.

Paste in only the 4 lines of the product license key! JetBrains needs to fix the registration process.

Do NOT include the tags before or after the key code...

Can someone please tell me where in intellij idea you enter license information. I've looked at every single menu, every single popup window, every possible place I can find in idea, without luck. I've just bought a new subscription license that I can't do shit with since JetBrains refuses to provide information on how to get it into Idea!!! This is actually the first time ever I've purchased something that I could then not use due to a complete lack of basic obviously needed information. What happened ? I though you were Jetbrains ?

Tommy, do you use the Ultimate Edition? The free Community Edition has no registration options.

If it's not the case, open some project and use Help | Register menu in the Ultimate Edition.

Another option is the Register menu on the Welcome screen.

It may depend on your Internet connection and/or proxy server configuration. Make sure you can open http://lservice-auth.jetbrains.com/ from your machine.

What do I need to do to get the third option? Mine only shows the License Key and License server options.

Jmlopez, as stated above, you need a working HTTPS connection to JetBrains server. If properly configuring the proxy in Preferences | HTTP Proxy doesn't help, contact your ISP or IT helpdesk for help, there could be some transparent proxy that filters out the requests or replaces the SSL certificate.

Hi Serge, and thanks for the student licence! I cannot connect to the server on the third option. 'connect timed out' I am at work and there is a proxy setup here, I am thinking it can't get through the proxy? I am on Windows, maybe Webstorm could read the proxy settings from the registry? Or perhaps put in some options to set the proxy settings in the registration dialog.

Cancel that last request, I went into settings and ticked the checkbox for untrusted certificates, then changed the proxy setting to automatically detect and it worked. Thanks! What about PHPStorm? I don't see the third option there (I have version 8.01 installed)

As stated on your site : "PhpStorm includes all the functionality of WebStorm (HTML/CSS Editor, JavaScript Editor) and adds full-fledged support for PHP and Databases/SQL."

Could it be considered to allow activating WebStorm with a PhpStorm license ? We would be able to work with WS when on a project which does not require all the Php stuff, which is more lightweight.

I have a similar problem. I think there is a firewall blocking a port or something required to activate my account. I get a SocketTimeoutException. Full error message:

JetProfile connection error: SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

I looked but couldn't find a way to generate a license key. It's probably because I have a student license. Is there a way to generate a license key or am I just hosed?

My manager sent me an IntelliJ IDEA 14 license key that fails with "Key is invalid. Please check user or company name." I've tried a couple of alternate capitalizations of my work e-mail address, which is associated with the license, but none has been successful. I also tried turning off the firewall.

@Serge: I see above that access to http://lservice-auth.jetbrains.com is required to perform authentication. My browser automatically switches to an https connection and I get a certificate error: "This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority" (from Chrome) or "The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown" (from FireFox). Could you please verify that your registration server is configured and working properly? Or is this behavior expected when accessing that URL through a browser?

This behavior is expected. If your license doesn't work, please submit a support ticket with the original license email and a screenshot.

I have similar problem.

 

When I tried  to activate license  in'RubyMine License Activation' window with 'JetBrains Account' selected and 'OK' clicked, I got error popup with message

'JetProfile connectino error: UnknownHostException: www.jetbrains.com'

 

But it's ok on web browser with url https://www.jetbrains.com or http://www.jetbrains.com.

So I don't think It's of network things.

Make sure proxy server is configured correctly in IDE settings.

When I want to register the new IDEA 15 with the license code I've used before in IDEA 14. I'm told that it is a legacy format and I should convert it.
I'm asked for first name, last name and email, but I don't know it.
OK, I know name but I don't know what I should enter and if it is important.
I have a yearly subscription license and I have only a username and the license code. What should I enter?

Marco, you can specify any name and email where you will receive the new converted key. Please submit tickets with this kind of questions next time, as it's not related to this KB document and users subscribed to it will receive annoying notifications.

I also have problems activating IntelliJ 15. In our company the proxy server breaks up the SSL certificate, therefore we cannot use SSL (it is not working in IntelliJ, only non SSL sites are reachable).
Until now i could enter the license, but now i have to convert it and that doesn't work because of the SSL connection needed.

Is there another way to convert to the new license not using IntelliJ, but via email or on the website ?

But I did not register the product.Activation code even copy and paste.
It is not registered with JetBrains Accout. It does not Systems that Your license has expired.
