2023.1 Is the new UI designed to mimic VS Code?
Answered
I tried the new UI and found that it has changed significantly, almost becoming similar to VS Code. I have VS Code installed on my computer, and it really looks too similar. If the new UI is going to be mandatory in future versions, I might just switch to using VS Code directly, since the UI doesn't have much of a difference, and it's also free and open source.

Hello, 515513493. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the new UI. We believe that IntelliJ IDEA remains the best tool for working with the source code regardless of its appearance. Additionally, we want to inform you that we have no intention of disabling the old UI for a minimum of two years from the time of this post.
If you encounter any difficulties regarding the new UI or have any recommendations for improving it, please don't hesitate to open a new issue in our YouTrack.
Thank you for your reply. Now I can renew my subscription with confidence. As a loyal user of IDEA, I still hope that IDEA can maintain its own characteristics. If the new UI is eventually going to be used, I hope that users can choose for themselves in the settings.
But why change it though? Out of many IDEs I used for different languages, Jetbrains products had best UI by far. Really hope you don't give up on this new UI, it was so modern and perfectly balanced compared to competition.
Was even considering moving to Webstorm for frontend but I really don't like new UI and where it is going,
Scepanovicaleksa96, I believe your questions have been thoroughly addressed in the first article about the new UI on our blog. As previously stated, we intend to maintain the old UI, which has received much praise from our customers, for at least a year (and two months) from now. While I can't provide any concrete details about the future beyond that, I acknowledge your fondness for the old UI and assure you that it won't go unnoticed.
I agree 100%. The new UI seems frustrating. It indeed looks like a mimic of VSCode. The whole point of using IDEs of IntelliJ is that it makes your life as a developer easier, You have instant access to every tool u need via the current UI. VSCode mimic seems less functional, tools are harder to find (one might say that is because I am accustomed to old UI, but I think it's objectively less intuitive).
D Tabatadze could you please elaborate a bit on what tools exactly are harder to find for you?
What do you find less intuitive in the new UI compared to the classic one?
I think if someone likes the new UI that user already uses the VS Code. Why do you have to replace a familiar surface? Maybe Microsoft had bought up JetBrains?
Sadly, our studies showed that many new users failed to understand IntelliJ interface due to a screen clutter. We addressed this issue by developing NewUI, which complies to many many newcomer's requirements.
Unfortunately you can't switch to old ui anymore. At work we are going to cancel subscription and go for VScode seems it looks the same and it's for free.
Nadia Tarashkevich I would much prefer to care about actual paying customers who liked the UI in the state it was in (which is neither “old” nor “classic”). Give the new users a plugin, let them choose on installation but please let me do my daily work without interrupting me with pointless forced design-for-designer changes. This is bugging me to the point that if I have to relearn a new UI, I will cancel my subscription and learn VS code or Eclipse.
Jakubpas please note that you can still install the Classic UI plugin to switch old UI.
Robert unfortunately, from our experience new users tend to use defaults. There are several reasons to this. It is hard to make them use new UI without introducing it as a default option.
