Gripe: IntelliJ performance and resource utilization

Answered

In recent weeks IntelliJ has become a real pain in the rear to use. I think it happened around the last major update. The IDE starts up slow, constantly utilises 600% CPU and still not getting things done quickly. And god forbid opening multiple project windows at the same time! And why is the IDE constantly re-indexing virtually everything, including JDK and content of the maven repository that hadn't changed in months if not years? This is getting to the point where I am considering switching IDE!

I do not think that this is something that is caused by my hardware, because that hasn't changed (3.2Ghz 6 core i7, 64GB). Is this just my impression or are there other people out there having the same troubles lately?

PS: I am not going to submit logs or spend hours bothering doing performance analysis that is Jetbrains's job. I'm just here to 'take the temperature' on this issue.

Hello Juergen Simon. Please, accept my apologies for the performance problems you met.

Each problem of this type is unique, so if you could spare some time to capture the CPU snapshot, it could be very helpful for us, and we could provide you recommendations on how to improve the IDE performance in your exact case. Only several minutes are needed: you should press  Help | Diagnostic Tools | Start CPU Usage Profiling , ensure that the high CPU usage problem is reproduced, and wait several minutes; after that, press   Help | Diagnostic Tools | Stop CPU Usage Profiling . To share the received snapshot, you can use the JetBrains Uploads service and post here the ID you receive after uploading.

Also, if you didn't update your IDE to the 2023.1.1 bugfix release, it could help because we fixed several performance problems there, for example, this one related to Spring.
