CLion stops breaking on breakpoints though lldb works on Mac

Dear helper,

I have been using CLion for several years now and I am running into trouble recently. The debugging feature simply stopped working. It does not stop on any of the breakpoints anymore. I am running CLion 2017.1 but had the same issue before updating a couple of days ago (on 2016.??). My machine is a Mac running 10.12.3 on which I repeat it was working perfectly until a couple of days. In addition, I can debug the executable produced by cmake directly using lldb via the terminal and it works fine. The debugger in |Preferences|Build, Execution, Deployment| is set to Bundled LLDB 3.9.0 and it has not changed as far as I can tell. Finally, I checked that the Run/configuration of the target is set to Debug.
