Compile times, eclipse vs javac

Answered

So, I have 2 MacPros.  #1 is a 3.7 GHz Quad Core, #2 is a 3 GHz 8-core.  The eclipse compiler is markedly slower on the 8-core cpu, where as the javac compiler is practically the same between the two.  This is perplexing to me.  I was under the impression that the eclipse compiler ran better with more cores.

MacPro 1 (3.7 GHz 4-core)

  • eclipse: 1 min 35 sec
  • javac: 1 min 56 sec

MacPro 2 (3.0 GHz 8-core)

  • eclipse: 3-4 min
  • javac: 1 min 58 sec

Am I missing something?  I have "Compile Independent Modules in Parallel" checked.  Are there other settings/parameters I need to set?

Edit:  Why is the eclipse compiler so much slower when the javac compiler is practically the same speed?

Im find the opposite, the eclipse compiler is significantly faster at compiling a large project taking just under a minute while javac takes over 5 minutes sometimes up to 10 minutes. Looking at the output dir with classes seems to show all the classes written and VisualVM shows the compiler threads idle. Eventually javac does finish but its very slow…

Hi Dolinar Miroslav Pokorny , could you please share the following:

1. Go to Project Structure, and share the JDK of the project, and the number of the modules.

2. The compiler name and parallel settings of each test.

3. Open build-log-jul.properties in the log/build-log directory of the system directory and remove the leading # from these two lines:

#org.jetbrains.jps.level=FINER
#\#org.jetbrains.jps.level=FINER

Run both builds, then use Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data. Upload the result at https://uploads.jetbrains.com and share the Upload ID that the page shows.
