Can't change the colour of the console apart from the default colour scheme.
I change the colour of the console, it changes the colour of the editor. I change the colour of the editor, it changes the colour of the console.
Using git bash for my console if that makes a difference.

Did you make a copy of the scheme e.g. Darlic_james and work on it. I don't thin that you can change the default schemes directly.

I want my console to have a black background and my editor to have a white background.

I assume that you use IntelliJ theme in Settings\Preferences | Appearance & Behavior | Appearance.
Going to Editor | Colors & Fonts | Console Colors > Console and changing Background color manually should help.
Don't forget to change neighbor output colors such as Standard Output and System Output.
