PyCharm causing entire macOS to freeze

For about a month since I've started using PyCharm Community Edition, I get intermittent freezes while writing code where PyCharm becomes unresponsive.  When I try to force quit PyCharm, it never completes.  At the same time, all my other programs on my Mac stop responding to new commands.  I can move windows and programs around, but if I do something like type "ls" into an open shell, it just hangs indefinitely.  Eventually, my whole screen goes black and I'm forced to force restart my Mac by holding down the power button.  I have 16 GB of RAM on a 2015 Retina MacBook Pro, and I'm never even close to memory cap.  This freeze seems to be random--I could work in PyCharm for 3 hours before it freezes my whole OS or sometimes it's only 30 minutes into writing Python code that it freezes.  As of such, I have not been able to repeat it.

Has anyone experienced the same issue using PyCharm on macOS?  Please advise, otherwise I will need to find a new Python IDE, though I really like PyCharm.

This is the PyCharm I am using:

Hi Pavel,

I would be happy to send the logs over.  But is there information about my code in the logs?

Nope, there's none. There can be some IP addresses (e.g. for deployment) inside `idea.log` file, but we guaranty it's privacy. You can also directly report the problem to our bug tracker (make sure to limit visibility level to idea-developers or pycharm-team at least for attached files).
