Plots hang in script

I did see an ancient issue about this, but it says it was fixed.  I just switched from Spyder and my current code creates a few plots.  On Spyder they would create a new window normally, but on PyCharm, the plot opens, but the code is blocked until I close it.  I am using a python console 3.6 from WinPython.  How can I fix this?
