Indexing taking forever

I'm using the community edition 2017.2. This behavior started suddenly today. PyCharm becomes totally unusable because is trying to index the entire Anaconda python packages folder.  It take forever and uses tons of memory.  I'm on a Mac running latest OS and Python 3.6. 

I cannot exclude these folders from indexing as they are external libraries. How can I make Pycharm stop doing this indexing. It has become e impossible to use. 

Should I revert back to an older version???  Pleas help.
