Can't use 'tab' to indent wherever I like

So the title basically says it all. Im using OS X and neither Pycharm nor CLion lets me use 'tab' wherever I like to in order to format my code to my preference, I have been looking all over to find a solution, probably looked on the Settings countless times. Does anyone have a solution for this? Since I don't feel like spamming my keyboard with spaces whenever I want to indent something. And no, I do not want to only use the "automatic" indentation that the IDE provides. Thanks!
