PhpStorm keeps crashing and works extremely slow on macOS Catalina since 2023.2.1 update
Hello everyone,
Since upgrading to PhpStorm 2023.2.1, I've experienced significant lag, even during basic tasks like typing. To troubleshoot, I've deactivated all my plugins, but the issue persists.
I acknowledge that my Mac isn't the latest model, but it ran earlier versions of PhpStorm smoothly, even with 15-20 plugins active.
Specs:
- Device: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
- Operating System: macOS Catalina
- Processor: 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
- Memory: 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
PhpStorm:
- Build: #PS-232.9559.64 (August 25, 2023)
- Runtime Version: 17.0.8+7-b1000.8 x86_64
Any guidance or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,
It is hard to say anything without checking logs first. Would it be possible to collect & attach these?
Logs can be collected with the “Help > Collect Logs…” menu action. You may JetBrains Upload services for sharing (just let me know the Upload ID):
https://uploads.jetbrains.com/
Is it possible to exclude sensitive data about my projects in these logs? The ‘indexing-diagnostic’ folder includes all my recent projects
Unfortunately, it is not possible. However, you may exclude these directories at this point, leaving only troubleshoot.log, idea*.log files (all of them) and all threadDumps-freeze* folders.
I'm having the same issue, constantly freezing, running very slow. Started immediately after this update.
I'm on a Mac Studio (2022), M1 Max, 32GB Ram.
PHPStorm 2023.2.1, Build #PS-232.9559.64 (August 25, 2023). Runtime version 17.0.8+7-b1000.8.aarch64
Is it possible to downgrade, it's pretty unbearable.
On Catalina, 2019 i9 Macbook Pro w/ 64G RAM - Recently upgraded from a 2022 version of PhpStorm (which felt snappy and was fine) to PhpStorm 2023.2.1 and can confirm that the UI latency / lag is quite tangible and annoying.
Guess I should have mentioned, I'm on Monterey 12.6.8
I also had no issues with the previous version. I've had to stop using this current version because it is not only slow to use but it is slowing my entire machine down to a crawl when I have PHPStorm open, even if I'm not doing anything in it. I close it, and my machine works perfectly again. Going to look into figuring out how to downgrade later today.
Downgraded to 2023.1.4 and the problems all went away, back to normal speed.
The slowing now only happens when I hit 5 open projects at once (just wanted to test what it could handle). Much better than a single project with 2023.2.1. Hopefully this can get fixed soon and doesn't continue along further versions.
Folks, it is really uneasy to tell what is going on in performance cases troubleshooting without logs and/or CPU snapshots as each case could be unique – sadly, there is no universal solution.
I would suggest to submit a YouTrack ticket, so we may take a closer look on each scenario:

Logs can be collected with the “Help > Collect Logs…” menu action. As for the CPU snapshots, you may find more information here:

So… i guess no update on this one? I'm still using 2022.3.3 and kind bummed out since i can't use bunch of new PhpStorm's feature. Tried to upgrade to 2023.3.2 and right away it got extremely slow and janky. impossible to work like that.
I just Sign up just to say it looks like it is an overall problem. After some time(random) IDE is getting a hit of lag that is unable to move over. Restart of IDE helps.
Issue persist since September 2023….
Hi,
As mentioned above, most of the performance-related issues are unique and require an individual approach, so I would recommend to submit your own YouTrack report:

Tried out 2024.1 EAP and it seems like problem with freezing cursor is resolved. MBP 2015, Catalina OS
I can confirm Alexander's comment. 2024.1 EAP works perfectly on my MBP 2015, Catalina.
Sonoma OS crashes all time. I can't open IDE at all:
Upload id: 2024_02_29_8ENBbx5AzEiNxfZGWm3igN (file: phpstorm crashes all time.rtf) PhpStorm-2023.3.4
I also tried with 2024.1, 2023.1.4 but it doesn't work at all.
Hi,
Would it be possible to collect Java crash logs and submit a YouTrack report?
https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue
Usually, Java crash reports are placed in the user profile root and files look like `java_error_in_phpstorm*.log" as naming convention.

I confirm this fixes problem, but in my case partially.
Here are my additional steps after installing 2024.1 EAP:
- invalidated all caches
- then changed Antialiasing to “Greyscale” for IDE and Editor options in Appearance & Behaviour > Appearance settings.
