Input function not working

I have been trying the simple ‘car’ program that is described here.  The input function poses the question “What should I do……”, but then when I try to enter the answer like A--meaning accelerate, instead the console starts with things like “assertion error” and so on.  It's like it's editing the program instead of providing the window to enter input.
