Saving removes whitespace on whitespace-only line

If you have a line with whitespace only, and your caret is at the end of that line, and you hit save (CTRL+S), then the whitespace is stripped.

Personally, I tap CTRL+S without thinking about it whenever I have a second-long pause in my typing, and this makes me have to add the whitespace again.

This is of course only a very minor inconvenience, but is there an option to disable this mechanic?

Using version 2016.3 on Debian Jessie.
