No, you cannot change the colors, but you can disable File Colors->Use colors in Editor Tabs and it will be more distinguishable. Anyway, we are aware of the usability problem here and will improve the appearance.
I'm using 2016.1 and I can't find any way to customize the color of the selected tab.
As the original poster said 4 years ago, the selected tab easily gets lost. I have read the suggestion to disable File Colors, but I like that feature as well.
Is there a solution to this problem? After about an hour of searching, I've reached my limit. Please advise. Thanks.
If you're improving it - it'd also be nice to have the option to make it REALLY stand out at the top.
I know it's on the breadcrumb, and the tab bar - but both of those things move. It'd be lovely to have a fixed location somewhere for the eyes to see the currently edited document
Did you guys ever do anything with this? The git file coloring + darkula is killing me :(
so tired of wincing at my screen, but I need the git integration for the history. I do all my git from command line or sourcetree. I don't nee dthese colors at all. please.. how can I just make it white? I can't take anymore.. I'm gonna need glasses at this rate. :/

You are right -that does help a bit.

:p
It doesn't look like the default Darcula editor theme. Check if you done' have a customized theme selected and try restarting AppCode.
Echoing what D.P. said. It's 2017 and this is still seems impossible. :-/
It's not yet implemented, here is a feature request: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-126775
