Newbie question: Breakpoints?

I'm an experienced developer - (.Net) - but new to python and pycharm.

I'm inheriting an existing project and need to get to the point of being able to at least walk the code ASAP.  I'll need breakpoints working in a larger project, but for now, i can't even get program execution to break at a breakpoitn in something utterly simple.  I have a sample python file "odbchelper.py" from a book "Dive into python".  It's loaded up - and i can run it through pycharm and see the expected output in the command window - however if I set a breakpoint, execution doesn't stop.  What am I missing?

Hi Matt!

Do you start it with Debug button (Shift+F9)?

Not starting in debug was the issue. This is the first IDE I've seen of any type that doesn't automatically run in debug. I'm sure there is a good reason for it, but don't know what it might be. I'm sure as I move through things I'll learn more about both Python and PyCharm and find a good reason for this. In the meantime, thanks for your help.
