List of "variables" or use with external tool parametewrs

I have seen refernces to variables/macros like $FILE_PATH$ in varoius places but can't find any reference documentation that lists them.

Can anyone provide a link?

Try pressing the "Insert macro" button in the "Create Tool" dialog.

It's there, on External Tools screen – when you edit/creating new entry, just click on "Insert macro..." button.

because you can't search for information as easily in the UI!

You have. It's now the "+" icon on the right of the input fields.

there is no such button right now (I use latest pycharm pro) and I see no way to get the list. 
Screenshot from above is helpful though
