Update plugin dialog hangs (v 7.0.1)

I just installed 7.0.1 and needed to update the Ruby plugin. Several times now, I have had the "Download Plugins" dialog up, reporting that it is "Downloading plugin Ruby", but does not seem to finish (5+ minutes). Hitting the cancel button in the dialog disables it, but does not seem to have any other effect. I had to kill the Windows process to shut down IDEA.

Perhaps there is heavy load on the servers now, so this may not be reproducible if that's all it is. However this is a fairly urgent issue, as I cannot use v7 until I can get this sorted out.

Anyone else having this problem?

Do you have a proxy in your network? Can you access the http://plugins.intellij.net/
site from your browser?

No proxy; yes can get to http://plugins.intellij.net/ -- it's slow, however.

In the initial dialog, the latest list of plugins is downloaded. In two cases, this worked for me. It's not working now. When installing a plugin, the plugin manager first tries to connect and was successful in my cases, however sits at "Downloading Ruby Plugin". Cancel has no effect.

I suspect this is a temporal issue, perhaps due to load on the server. However in the case that the server is slow, the handling of a timeout in this dialog may not be working correctly, and because the dialog is modal, the only way to resolve the problem is to kill the application from task manager (no context menu on the Start bar, even).

Thanks,

Tom

Could be a dns issue - if your dns server misbehaves and swallows
requests then the timeout on that can be pretty big in java - 5 mins or so.

But the why's are kind of academic - whatever the reason, clicking
cancel should surely just close the dialog asap... maybe a interrupt()
call is needed on the updating thread?

Hi Nathan -- thanks. It's not DNS (I set up the DNS server here, which would usually lend support to your hypothesis, but in this case, I checked the logs :-). A connection is established, according to the dialog box, at least. I also let it run for way more than 5 minutes, which is the default socket timeout for most Unix and Windows systems.

Thanks for the idea.
