Debugging plugins

How do you debug an open api plugin under IDEA 3.0? Previous posts suggest modifying IDEA.BAT and running two instances of IDEA, but I understand that 3.0 does not permit this.

Idea allows running any number of instances as long as config and system
paths are different.

Change the bat so that the new instance has different config and system
paths
.
