IDEA-140.2110.5 - Tab label is truncated

Tab title limit is set to 100 characters, tab label is still truncated

I second this. It is very annoying when I have several tabs open trying to debug an issue. It is hard to know what the tabs are when they're cut off. Showing the full tab label with the dropdown on the right side was a better approach. Would it be possible to add a configuration setting to have the dropdown option on the right like in 13?

Thank you!

I see that this issue is still not fixed.

It is a REALLY annoying behaviour. Just look at the attached picture.

I have a split editor window, so the tabstrip is anyway narrow. With a handful of open buffers, all I get to see is just the first letter of the filename! That is unworkable.

Please bring back the overflow button like it was in 14.0

Let's all vote on the issue to raise attention to it!

I see the issue is now closed, as "Obsolete", as the new behaviour is apparently by design.

For me personally the new behaviour is most of the time unworkable, however.

Often working in a split-screen mode, with 2 editor buffers side by side, I see that many tab titles are abbreviated to just 1 character, which is already half-faded. I see absolutely no indication anymore what file each tab is.

I can again turn off the setting for "Show tabs in single row" but that will again cost me a lot of vertical space, thus this is not desirable.

For me the behaviour of 14.0 was ideal: no loss of vertical space, and still able to see title of at least my most recent open tabs. It was for me a compelling reason to upgrade to 14.0 from 13.1.

I don't know what the reason was to change this again, and for whom it is better, but please consider either reverting to the behaviour of 14.0 in this regards, or allowing this as an option.

Kind regards,

I fully agree with you. I hope that they can be convinced to change this behaviour but seeing as that the issue raised for this has now been closed as "Obsolete", works as designed, I'm not sure they will...

Alexander,

I completely agree with Tim. Can you please shed some light on the reason for closing the ticket? Also, if this is the intended behavior going forward, what was the reasoning?

Also, I am using the latest EAP. I am still seeing the issue with the character limit not taking affect. It still will cut the file name down until only a single character is visible even if I set it to 100 characters. I honestly wouldn't mind this new behavior if the character limit worked and allowed to be greater than 100. This would be a compromise between the old and new behavior.

I think a better place to ask questions is the comments of https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-136391 Vassiliy is responsible for this feature. I will forward this thread to our UI developers yet another time to make sure they know users opinions.

Regards,
Alexander.

I agree.  Please bring back the overflow button.   I have learned to restrict my open files to a small enough number that I can read the names on my display, and then use Ctrl-E (recent files) to get at the ones that have been closed.

Looking at the issue on YouTrack, I believe that in the next EAP build there will be a new option to bring back the overflow button ("Hide tabs when too many
are open" or something similar to that).
