"Project Files Changed"

I'm getting this popup telling me that project files have changed -
however, I don't see how they could have actually changed (unless my
machine has been hacked, which is unlikely).

I'm using 139.69.2 but this also happened with 139.1.20.

It is very annoying.

This message really indicates external change in a project settings file. (In your case - one containing RunManager component configuration. To my knowledge, this should be .idea/workspace.xml, but you can search project files for "RunManager" entry yourself to be sure.) The only solution is to anyway investigate who changes that file. Since for many users everything is Ok.

Maybe, it's a network drive or a path with symbolic links or so (it may cause problems)? Maybe, update from VCS (normally workspace.xml is excluced)? Some antivirus activity? Any other external utility?

Regards,
Alexander.

No, it's not a network drive, nor a symbolic link, nor is it checked
into the VCS. I can't be positive, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't an
external process. (Why would an anti-virus checker be randomly changing
files?)

Then we can only guess, sorry.

1. Do you have a non-bundled plugin enabled?
2. Can you identify when this warning appears? Maybe, after certain actions in IDEA?
3. Does it appear while working with certain project or with any project?

Regards,
Alexander.

I'm having the same issue - it's very frustrating!

I do have files in the project on symbolic links. Why should this be an issue?
