As you know software tends to get heavier over time, as more features are added, more capabilities created. To get the same performance you need to either upgrade your hardware or revert to that older version (or possibly something new that has similar functionality to that older version). Your best bet if you can't upgrade your hardware is to either stick with IntelliJ 4 or switch to a simple text editor and command line tools.
IntelliJ is and always has been in my experience the fastest IDE out there. Sure on a 10 year old computer a new version of IntelliJ runs slower than a 10 year old version, but it still runs faster on it than a current version of just about everything else out there with more capabilities than notepad.
Are you runnning Idea 14 in the same computer you used to run Idea 4? :p
