Remotely(vpn) use intellij from a linux box --> best way?

I've been trying to work out the most usable way to access intellij installed on a linux box from home.  It has been a pain.  While at work.. x-windows works fine.. but xwindows being what it is.. ends up being dang slow at home via a VPN.   I've also tried first windows remote desktopping into a 'jump box' and then xwindowing into intellij.  That works ... better.. but I end up with sticky keys and its still really laggy.

What remote strategies seem to work best for folks?  

I'd love to just point a web browser at a running copy of intellij and have the UI show up.. wouldn't that be sweet?  hmm..  wonder if it could be done via a plug-in...
