Rebuilding my project now consistently crashes Idea X

Using any of IDEA UE 98.486/98.402/98.382, IDEA crashes whenever I try to rebuild my projects, and is basically now unusable.

It looks like everything compiles fine, then gets to the point where it says "Processing Maven Resources" and then IDEA crashes.

File hs_err_pidXXXX.log says "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: requested 160008 bytes for Chunk::new. Out of swap space?" but watching the memory usage in the lower right status bar, the memory usage doesn't go near the max.  I'm using the stock idea.exe.vmoptions file.

But more interestingly my .IntelliJIdea10/system/log/idea.log file says Connection timed out when "XMPPError connecting to intellijoin.org:5222.", and also at the end "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread"

Every time I restart and try again, the top of the Make window says "Information: Previous compilation did not terminate properly.  Caches may have been corrupted. Starting rebuild..."

Some code changes deprecating a often used class are resulting in hundreds more warnings than before (around 1300), but nothing else has changed that I know of.

Any idea what's going on?

(I've attached both files for review.)

Thanks,
-Alex

Have you tried invalidating the caches? File | invalidate Cache. Then restart IDEA.

I tried that, and also disabled by unused IDETalk plugin, but it's still crashing.

Now I'm seeing an "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" error in my hs_err_pidXXXX.log file, and hundreds of "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread" errors in my idea.log log file.  Hmmmm.

Files attached.

Should IDEA be attempting to create hundreds of threads like this???
(Also I tried adding this workaround "-XX:-ReduceInitialCardMarks" to my idea.exe.vmoptions.  Doesn't help.)

Any help is greatly appreciated, IDEA X is basically unusable for me now.

Try to delete these folders physically: /.IntelliJIdea10/system/index,
/.IntelliJIdea10/system/caches

"java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread"

try reducing heap memory..

Deleting those 2 directories gets me to a lot more stable point where I can sometimes rebuild my project successfully in build 98.486, but it's still periodically crashing or running out of heap space (or both) on rebuilds or JBoss deploys after that. (Still with the "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread" errors.)

I've seen the heap space messages before, and usually just increasing my heap space resolves them, but in Idea X I've increased my heap space to -Xmx800m where it then shows a warning about using more than 700M for heap, and compiling sometimes fails due to an "Intellij MappingFailedException" internal error of some sort like with a warning to DECREASE my heap size.  But otherwise still sometimes crashes the same way, so increasing my heap size doesn't seem to get me to a stable point.

Please note that on my same system in IDEA 9.0.4 using a separate set of project files for V9 I can rebuild this project and the same number/size of modules/code over and over with no problems using the default idea.exe.vmoptions file (-Xms128m -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=250m -ea)
so this is definitely some sort of problem with IDEA X!  Whenever it dies it lists over 1400 threads, most of them "JavaThread "ApplicationImpl pooled thread 1353" [_thread_blocked,"

Does IDEA X have some sort of large thread or memory leak?

My crash log and idea.log are attached. (I'm working on a WinXP box with 3GB RAM, and this is happening with nothing else RAM intensive running on my box.)

Anyone have any other ideas (the only non standard plugins I'm using are Tabifier & the Atlassian plugin for JIRA/Crucible.)

Thanks,
-Alex

Using the latest EAP from today (IU-98.510), I've rebuilt my project about 5 times and can't get this build to crash on me, so I think I was just running into a bug in the previous EAP version.

So I'm back on IDEA 10 again!  (Even though 9.0.4 is a pleasure to work with anyways. Heh.)

I had the same issue.
I tried versions 10, 9.0.4, & 9.0 and was having the same problem.

IntelliJ comes by default with ant version 1.7.1, I changed to use ant version 1.6.5 and my problems seem to be gone.
