unable to set php home

I have been using IntelliJ for years on Java projects happily. I have just been engaged to work on a PHP project and so upgraded to take advantage of the PHP support. I am running Windows x64 on this machine and it may just be time for an upgrade :) I setup the environment my client works in which is php and IIS. It's all running. I set up xdebug as specified in the documentation. I went to specify PHP home and I got the following error: "CLI has encountered a problem and needs to close..." I'm not sure how to proceed. I hope I'm in the right forum.

Ugh tried reinstalling php, xdebug and perhaps idea too? Something is busted on your system.

yeah, Ugh is right. It's a new client. I installed php with the windows zip and configured manually. You think it might help to run the installation package?

Well i doubt it, php is pretty self contained, try running it separately of idea and figuring out the problem that way, if your client is running IIS why not set up IIS on windows and use Microsoft's Web Platform installer for PHP, perhaps that version will work, I use this setup on my Win 7 x64 and apache with PHP on Linux. Also iirc your xdebug must be made for the same version of php, it'll crash if the version is wrong.

Something is really busted somewhere on your system isolating the problem to where or what crashes PHP should be your first priority, doubt it's IDEA's fault tough.

The xdebug is the correct version. They have a utility on the site for checking that. You just paste the output of phpinfo() in the site. So I think that's right. Plus I have it running on IIS right now. It runs fine. All I'm doing is pointing the IDE to the home directory that is serving php pages and boom, it fails with that message.

Yeah, I have windows 7 running on my laptop and I installed php with Windows Platform Installer. I haven't tried the IDE on the laptop yet. I was hoping to use the desktop. I like the real estate. Coding on a laptop makes me crampy. It could be an x64 thing on this development machine.

That error message isn't very helpful and otherwise php is running fine. Everything is working, except the IDE.
