Too large heap size message

Build 98.402 suddenly started showing this warning (910 heap, recommends 700). Really, what kind of problems is it referring to? If anything, it must not make reference to a 32-bit OS (it's 64 bit in fact), but the runtime JVM is 32-bit. Then again, never had a heap issue over the course of EAP, and the message is pretty annoying.

Hello Andrew,

IDEA uses a number of memory mapped files in addition to the regular JVM
heap, and the 32-bit virtual address space can be exhausted if the -Xmx value
is too large (this results in "out of memory: mapping failed" exceptions).

Hi Dmitry,

I'm yet to see this error, and I've been a loooong time IDEA user. It doesn't give a good first impression if IDEA gives you message just by starting it. Would a knowledge base entry or a recommendation in the error message itself be a better choice? You guys still need to sell IDEA licenses...

Thanks for the explanation. I spent most of last year running IDEA at the maximum heap possible for a 32bit VM and never saw that exception. 700mb is too low for what I need, I'd have to switch to 64bit then.

I'm on 64-bit as well, so the warning is quite annoying. If it can't detect that I'm on 64-bit (I'm running 64-bit JVM), at least give me the option of turning it off. It's annoying to see that popup every time I open a project. I've also never seen that out of memory error on either 32-bit or 64-bit machines, over the 1-year plus I've been using IDEA.
