There are lots of small (and not so small) goodies for plain Java programming like vertical indentation markers in the editor, the "Open in Explorer" action, subversion enhancements, global unused highlighting, a diff view in UML,  and much more.

IMHO the first IDEA X early access started out really great for "plain programmers": There's a very noticeable performance leap, the GUI is even more focues on the code itself and there are already a couple of new "plain" features, see http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/IDEADEV/IDEA+X+First+EAP+Release+Notes
These are only release notes for the first early acces version - I haven't seen a full roadmap for IDEA X yet.

Not to mention Idea X also uses pixels better by removing a lot of unnecessary padding.  Make those pixels work for you baby!

But IntelliJ is the only version which keeps the dependencies attached per module, instead of what IntelliJ thinks is a project. So if you use a lot of modules, eg for Maven, IntelliJ 8 is (IMO) the way to go. Or maybe 10 will improve that!
