Scratch files appear to be worthless

Am I missing something or are scratch files worthless? You can't execute them, you don't get javadoc quick lookup, you don't get code completion, you don't get code formatting, and the IdeaVIM plugin doesn't work in them. So what are they good for?

Code formatting and javadoc work, at least for Java and XML files.
Any functionality is worthless for someone who does not need it.
I use it to format stuff or edit something temporary.

Belive me, I need scratch files. They just don't currently do anything that makes them usable. Without javadoc, code completion, and code formatting then I can open a text editor and do the exact same thing.

The only thing that works in scratch files for me are syntax highlighting and live templates.
