Auto-update for release builds does not offer EAP builds.

I would vote for having the option, maybe guarded by a big warning.

People tend to ignore warnings despite the size or color. I don't want to
make it too easy to "accidentally" use an EAP.

And I don't want to have to download more than 100MB just to help Jetbrains
to find bugs in their software.

In other products, I have seen a checkbox under auto-update options to
enable updating to beta versions, defaulted to off. Maybe something
like that is all that's needed here.

If you want to be running the latest build, regardless of whether it's
an EAP, release candidate, milestone, final release etc, you do find yourself
having to download the full zip file fairly regularly when you transition
from one type of build to the other.

Take a look at the Atlassian Connector plugin settings in the 'General' tab.
It has options for auto-upgrading stable + snapshot builds, plus a 'check
now' feature that also works selectively on stable and snapshot builds. IDEA
needs something similar.

As an aside, I haven't found IDEA's 'check for update' feature very reliable
at all. It either reports 'Nothing found to update' even when I know there's
a new build available or sometimes it tells me there is a new build, but
doesn't offer to apply the update.

well, you only need to download these 100mb once
then use auto update between EAPs
and many users do not do it just to help Jetbrains find bugs
there are 2 other very popular reasons
1) it's the simplest legal way to use IDEA for free
2) new features

Auto-update for release builds does not offer EAP builds.

Are you willing to change that in one of the next builds? Suggestions how
this could be handled were given in this thread.

Yes, we'll most likely add an option to allow a release build to see EAP
updates. You can file a JIRA issue to make sure we don't forget. :)
