IntelliJ 13 hangs frequently

I'm using build 135.480 on Ubuntu 12.4.  IntelliJ seems great when it works, but it seems to be rather fragile.  I find that several times / day I have to restart the IDE, as it hangs doing background tasks.  As I write this there is a hang during Make on "Executing pre-compile tasks...", and I often also get hangs during "Writing classes..." that force a restart.  In some cases, the GUI remains responsive to input commands, in other cases, not so much.

I have dumped the threads during this current background task, which I've attached.  I'm hoping someone can help me debug what's happening.  If you have a few minutes to help, I appreciate your time.

A couple of the warnings I see from time to time that correspond with hangs:

[4003762]   WARN - ution.process.OSProcessHandler - Cannot kill process tree. Trying to destroy process using Java API. Cmdline:

[4359363]   WARN - tellij.ide.HackyRepaintManager - Access to realized (ever shown) UI components should be done only from the AWT event dispatch thread, revalidate(), invalidate() & repaint() is ok from any thread

I encounter similar issues running 135.690 on linux mint 14 64bit, but it started hapenning couple of builds ago, can't really identify the build that started this..

Likewise, every once in a while either
CTRL+ keys won't fire, such as CTRL+D (duplicate selection) won't do anything while the UI seems responsive otherwise,
also other context menu items such as CTRL+N won't do anything, while you can still type in editor..

There is no obvious entry in idea's log.

There are couple bugs already created, mostly in conjunction with the terminal window, there are also other posts on the first couple pages related to this sudden 'flakiness' of the ide, please, for the love of mike, fix this!

many thanks,

Hello IntelliJ IDEA developers community!

I'm experiencing the same problem with Intellij Idea build: 135.690.

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_55-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.55-b03, mixed mode)
Host: Linux 3.12.13-gentoo #1 SMP x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I had this problem several times today. Looks like AWT-Thead is caught in a thread lock.
Please have a look at the attached log files.

Thank you for your help and response in advance!

Best regards
Oleg Simanov

I see the same issue. I've got a pre-compile task set up to invoke an NDK build and update some asset files in an Android project. It used to work perfectly. Some recent update made it so IntelliJ doesn't note when the process completes.

Files get copied. The NDK build runs. The associated processes do terminate. Yet the status bar reads "Executing pre-compile tasks..." and the project can't be recompiled or launched until the IDE is restarted (and it must be force-closed, as it hangs forever waiting trying to terminate the already-terminated build task otherwise).

Happens fairly regularly on two Windows 8.1 machines.

I recommend you open a bug report on this ( Attach idea.log file and the threadDumps-timestamp directory for the time period it hung. (Logs are in .IntelliJIdea/System/log. See Directories used by the IDE to store settings, caches, plugins and logs for more information, or use Help > Show Logs). You can also reference Reporting performance problems and Getting a thread dump when IDE hangs and doesn't respond.
