Great news for Mac users!

Apple published Java Update 2 Preview for Leopard. Used today Java 6 from that update with Idea. Works great!

I love it. Will try it for next few days. I hope... at last... I can really use Java 6 with Idea. That would be cool!

Where did you find it? It's not in Software Update or on the Apple Java page.

No, of course not. It's a Developer Preview, so information about it can be found in Java Developer Mailing lists and on Developer Downloads page. It requires free ADC registration. https://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa

You don't need the developer preview from Apple to use Java 6 on the Mac .. there's already a released version that works great.

(Requires an Intel Mac that supports 64-bit though, as its a 64-bit only JVM)

Well, I can't say, that it works great. For me there were many problems. First, Idea, that is started under Java 6 was incredibly slow, eating CPU as mad. Next, there were reports (and mine too) where OS kernel panicks were triggered by Java 6 somehow.

And, of course, several bugs and inconsistences.

But now it's really great. I work with it for several days now. Whole days. And there was not a glitch. Great.

strange, i haven't seen the issues you mentioned. Core2Duo MacBook w/4GB ram running 10.5.4

either way, great to see forward progress with the Java implementation from Apple and fixing people's issues!
