When it comes to plugins, IntelliJ without a question doesn't even come close to Eclipse. However, what's even worse is that with every new IntelliJ (point-)release, some of the few Plugins one may have to come accustomed to, don't work anymore.
E.g. with SVNbar installed, the OSX version of Intellij 7.0.4 doesn't even start, the splash screen just remains on the screen for ever.
While error messages in IntelliJ log lead to a plugin issue, you have to find out yourself (trial and error) which one needs to be removed.
After removing SNVbar, IntelliJ finally started up, just to bring up a plugin related error dialog - SimpleHttpClient needed to be removed as well.
