XDebug on Ubuntu server VM

I'm running an Ubuntu server in VirtualBoxVM for a small side project I am working on. I've been unable to connect to XDebug on that VM using IDEA 12. The documentation on the website seems a little lacking and doesn't cover this particular scenario. Has anyone gotten this working and is there an external documentation anyone has found that explains how to do this?
