"Find in Path" Dialog Still Sub-Par

Hi,

The "Find in Path" dialog still has all the bugs and shortcomings it had before we were forced by the introduction of the new Find Bar to use Find in Path whenever we want to get a Find Tool window showing all matches.

Specifically:

- Running defaults are not maintained.
- The dialog layout is crude and wasteful.
- The minimum width is excessive.
- Text fields don't undo.
- The File Mask is imposed even when the Scope is Custom: Current File.

I've reported most of these before (all except the undo) and they remain unfixed.

I started a thread to discuss some of the short comings of the new Find Bar, including adding a find all, and some options to make the new Find Bar work for us all. Not sure if they will all work or not, but some constructive conversation on them might help.

I personally only want to use the Find In Path when I feel the need to search multiple files, otherwise, I would like to stay out of it, including the Find All.

Currently "Find in Path" is the only way to get the old style "Find All" list of matches in the Find window.

Nonetheless, the problems that exist with Find In Path are really just quality issues. If that dialog is going to be in the product, its appearance and behavior should be brought up to good UI standards.

I like the old find dialog much better.

The new find bar looks snazzy- but in practice, the way it works slows
me down a lot.

That may be so. I personally didn't like the old modal pop-up, but I can understand that others liked it better than the new one.

However, there really only seems to a few options available:

1. Convince JB to go back, which will take more than sparse snipes at the new UI.
2. Figure out a way to make the new UI work for everyone
3. Only use find in path
4. Go to another product.

I personally went with number 2, since I think the new find bar is here to stay(but I could be wrong). So, I am trying to be proactive and constructive on this topic. If it is slowing you down, then check out the new thread I started on the topic and add you input.

But, after the initial euphoria of the new find bar wore off, it seems that most posts about it are just complaints now.

Yes, I know that Find All is now only available in Find in Path, which is why I addressed that very topic in the new thread I started on the Find Bar.

And, I am not saying that problems in the Find in Path UI should not be fixed; I never even implied it.

However, you have complained about the Find All not available in the Find Bar, so, maybe, getting it added to the new Find Bar, along with other improvements, might help you, along with others. Maybe not.

call me crazy, i like the new un-intrusive find. i wish a couple other modal dialogs were converted to work that way.

further... get rid of all modal dialogs somehow. that would be great.

What about option 5) dealer's choice? That is, have both.

Map the old modal find dialog to one keyboard sequence, and the new find bar to another. Perhaps ctrl-F for the dialog box and alt-F3 for the new find bar (since alt-F3 use to be incremental search, and the new find bar is like an extra-fancy, new & improved incremental search). Of course, users can switch the mappings if they like.

With the amount of discussion that has been occurring around the find bar and the modal dialog, it appears to be a very personal choice, and we might have better luck trying to resolve the brace war ;)

Personally, I like the new find bar for most situations. But I can easily see where others might prefer the modal dialog box. And for certain situations, I too would find it preferable. In the case of the latter, the use of find in path with a"current file" scope selected is tolerable; But I do occasionally miss the "Selected text" scope from the old find dialog. And lastly, to a new user, I could see having to open "Find in path" to search the current file might be counterintuitive.

Actually, I kind of did that in my right up, bringing up two options for getting the old find pop-up back, for those that want it. :)

But, the "Selected Text" scope was something I missed, probably should add that.
