IDEA 12.1 won't self-update Follow

This happened very often for me on other builds, too. The auto-update seems
to work only for a quite limited set of changes.

When I check for updates I'm not given the option for IDEA to update itself, rather when I click "Download" I'm taken to the website and must download and replace IDEA manually.  Why is this?

Ah, I guess that must be problem, it was set to "Early Access Program".  I've set it back to the default and now it works as expected.  Thanks!
