6755: Could not save application settings: null
Hi there,
I get this error dialog pop-up every time the focus is changed away from IDEA 6755. I even tried wiping off everything is settings and config in order to get rid of this, but still no luck.
Is anybody else seeing this? For me this is the first time that I have to constantly fall back to the released version right after installing each EAP build, for so many consecutive builds.
I used to switch to the EAP builds right after they started and never look back. Not so with the current EAPs, and I have to mention that my current project is one of the simplest ones I remember ever working on (one project, one web module).
Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong?
Andrei

There must be an exception stacktrace in the log file titled as "Saving
application settings failed".
Could you please post it here or submit a JIRA issue?

I have been getting this for a while. I believe it is a permissions problem (on SLED 10). I do not have the problem right now (6755), but it was there on and off (usually a specific project) for several builds.
Sure, here's the Jira entry:
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-11907
HTH,
Andrei
Same problem with me.
Is there any solution? I'm using Vista Ultimate. May be this problem is related with Vista.
Andrei, What is your OS?
I just installed 6755 on Fedora Core 6, and I'm getting this as well:

Greetings

I've solved my problem. The problem is configuration dir of IDEA is read-only in some cases. I don't know why but if you change the read-only property from the configuration directory and subfolders, you can easily save your application settings as before.
In my vista, the configuration folder is under C:\User\MYUSERNAME\.IntelliJIdea70 folder. If you are using Windows XP, you can find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\MYUSERNAME\.IntelliJIdea70 folder by default.
Regards,
Isa
I've seen this problem once and then it went away (the directory, that is). I can't find it (and yes, I have show hidden files in Explorer on).
IntelliJ seems to work now.
JetBrains, when are you planning to look a little deeper into Vista? There seem to be several issues with IntelliJ on Vista.
Any preliminary testing that you did, recommendations, etc.?
Thanks and see you at AJAX World!
Hello Amnon,
I've been working under Vista on my dev machine for a couple of months already.
Everything seems to work pretty well after the release of JDK 1.5.0_11 (there
were quite severe problems with Windows L&F on previous JDK releases).
If there are any problems, feel free to file JIRA issues for them.

This didn't work for me on linux. I made sure that the .IntelliJIdea70
folder that IDEA created in my home folder was writeable...
Any suggested workaround for linux?

The same for me.
But when I start IDEA the configuration dir of IDEA is read-only in some cases again and I get the error Message from IDEA.
:(
The Problem still exists.

Have you tried the workaround suggested by Anna in this bug report?
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-15199?rc=1
You might want to start one of the previous EAP builds in order to get a (clean) config dir and then start the latest build. This worked for me.
HTH,
Andrei
I suggest you compare .IntelliJIdea70 and .IntelliJIdea60 or .IntelliJIdea70
created by previous EAP directories. I've found they differed - the one from
6755 didn't have config/ and some other directory - I cannot recall wich,
but you will find the difference. I copied missing directories and it worked.

Thanks, that worked!

I'm facing the same issue with IDEA 7.0 M1 (build 6819). I've double checked my .IntelliJIdea70 against .IntelliJIdea60 directory, and havent found any major differences.
.IntelliJIdea70 is writable and Everyone has Full Control over it.
apart from getting a different build, is there a solution at all?
(I don't want to get another build yet since HTML support in build 6913 (the latest I have) is broken..)
Hello Dharampal,
If you have the editor split and get an exception trace with "Cannot find
file by URL: ..." message, it may be this issue:
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEADEV-16401
Workaround is to make editor not split.
I had also got the same message once, when many tool windows were open, and
closing several ones has resolved the problem.
Alexander.
Hi,
I get the same error with different files each time like applicationLibraries.xml, customization.xml, feature.usage.statistics.xml and so on.
I am running 6.0.5 build #6180.
Does anyone have a proper solution for this?
None of the prior solutions worked.
