Poll: I'm not use/not understand feature in IDEA

Hello,

Since last EAP build enabled plugin deactivation feature and moved Commander to a plugin i'm just deactivate it. And, thanks JetBrains for such user friendly addition.

So now the pull:
Did you know things in IntelliJ IDEA are useless, misunderstanding, strange or something else? Better, if you will describe why, by your opinion, this feature must be pluggable or dropped at all etc.

Thank you!

+1 yup, never figured out what Commander was useful for.

To compare two in-project files... seldom needed but handy if.

Agreed. The todo functionality is really helpful. Definitely not a waste of any time.

  • TODO -- Always use it.

  • Compiler/Ant/Maven - use it.

I wonder if we are seeing different features used for different size projects. If you typically only work in one size project (where, say Ant is not part of the process) then you might not realize how useful integration like this can be for projects that do.

Of course I could be completely wrong about this.

Man that must be painful when refactoring...

Why? It works excellent. IIRC, there are some serious problems with
Subversion in IDEA when renaming a class and renaming it again before commit.

BTW, SmartSVN Professional can detect renamed/moved files and hence adds
them with history.

Some people just hate to use keyboard :)

Just curious, how do they develop software? Using a voice recorder or
dragging text fragments around with the mouse? ;)

  • TODO -- Never use it. It just waste parser time.

I think TODOs need to be improved, not deleted. Per-changelist TODO would be great.

Correct! :)
First improvement - search files per patterns, instead of patterns per files. :)

I most want the functionality: the file Tabs can be sorted by alphabetically or otherelse....

for now, it is giddy to find out a file (tab) among twenty or thirty file tabs, unless, you like to use Ctrl+N.

Cool - I confess it's been awhile since I've looked at SmartSVN/SmartCVS
- I'll have to take a look :)

LVCS only keeps the changes for a limited time though. Personally I have set it to 100 days. In addition I always use a VCS even for small private projects. I like that even for small projects because:
- anything in the VCS is not totally broken (is supposed to compile and can run unit tests)
- automatic backup of the project (VCS is on separate machine)
- can be developed on different machines (just a checkout or update to get the latest version)

As a project grows there are only more and greater advantages to using a VCS.

Yes,
I installed this plugin,
but this plugin can only reorder the tabs in same tab-row.
It is perfect if all tabs in all rows can be reordered.

Really,

what version of the plugin do you have? Mine is 1.2.3 and it does reorder all tabs in all rows. The behavior you are describing sounds strange.

Regards,
Jens

Note that the sort order is case-sensitive, i.e. it places the upper case files before the lower case ones.

Yes, mine is 1.2.3 too, and my Idea version is 6.0.5, or the plugin does not work properly in IDEA 6.0.5? But someone said the plugin can work in IDEA 7.0. (Refer to the homepage of the plugin).

Attached is the screenshot after I pressed CTRLSHIFTALT+A to sort the tabs alphabetically.

And I tested in IDEA 7020, the plugin also can not sort all tabs just like in my IDEA 6.0.5

Presumably he wants them all sorted alphabetically, not just each row...

But they are... it's just that A starts from the middle... and how can
it not do this if the selected tab starts with R?

Yes, I want all file-tabs sorted alphabetically, but no just each row.

well if you look closely they are indeed all sorted.

I guess the thing that makes you think otherwise is the fact that the tab row containing the currently selected tab is pushed to the front row, and sorting is done according to it
