Maven plugin: Working offline?

There is a special option on a General page of Maven options.
The next EAP also will have a dedicated button on a toolbar.

is there support for working offline? I was hacking on some code in
the train (no wifi) and i noticed that 'Synchronize with Maven
projects' was incredibly slow. Could this be because it tries to
contact the repository?

Maybe the plugin can try to detect if the machine is online or offline
and then run maven in that mode?
