IDEA doesn't copy plugins during the upgrade process, for arguable good reasons. You need to copy your plugins from the Demetra configuration directory (...Intellij60\plugins) to the Selena one (...Intellij70\plugins).

looks like one of the plugins isn't compatible and causes selena to freeze when showing the spalsh screen. is there a way to find out which one is causing this?

remove them all and add them one by one until it does it again ?

that's not a way, it's torture.
i went another way: screw the plugins, just re-install the important ones. that way worked.

Of course this just means we don't know which plugin is at fault, so no one can be contacted about fixing it..

JetBrains could help here, too. IDEA shouldn't die when loading broken plugins -- it should catch any errors thrown during the loading process and warn the user about the broken plugin, including it's full name, version and maybe author contact info.

In my case the offender was tabifier plugin, but problem does not seems to be plugin-specific - IDEA chokes on plugin.xml which has (not
]]>
) within plugin description.

Andrei,

Could you please give us a problematic plugin.xml? A JIRA issue would be
also excellent.

Just take the latest version of tabifier (v.5.2, Tabifier_2473.jar) from plugin repository.

A JIRA issue would be
also excellent.

Here it is: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-11154
