This will eventually happen when we start delivering IDEA with 1.6 as a host JRE. Since we have some problems with 1.6 still, we are not ready to do it now.
Will there be an IntelliJ 6.x release that has 1.6 as host JRE, or won't
that happen until IntelliJ 7.x ?
Hello Ted,
We don't plan to release any 6.x versions with bundled JRE 1.6, although
you can configure IntelliJ IDEA to use JRE 1.6 by yourself.

That doesn't do much good speedwise. Although 1.6 is generally much smoother with IDEA (than 1.5) the 20% startup boost and memory usage reduction doesn't happen if the IDEA and it's libraries are not compiled with 1.6.
Agreed. It would be great if Jetbrains did launch a jdk 6 optimized version while we wait patiently for the now renamed 6.5 release.
