Lost ability to switch between idea and Eclipse

I'm slightly confused.

I succesfully imported an eclipse project last week.  Now I can't seem to do the same thing to another eclipse project

If I try to import an eclipse project using the instructions here:
http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/webhelp/importing-eclipse-project-to-intellij-idea.html

Idea refuses to see the .project file.
Even though it is definitley there and still openable in Eclipse.

If I choose New Project then import there's no Eclipse option in the dialogue only Graden and Mavel?

If I follow the the instructions here:

http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/webhelp/exporting-intellij-idea-project-to-eclipse.html

Indicate I need to select the Dependencies Storage Format Dropdown.... to flip between Idea and Eclipse
Only there isn't a drop down :/
