Directory diffing

In the IDEA Help File, it says

IDEA does not currently support comparison of physical
directories. However, if you have a utility that does,
you can set an option to point to that tool, and then
invoke it to compare directories from within IDEA.

Do you plan to implement directory diffing in Demetra?
I mean, given how good the directory diffing in Local
history is, it should not be too hard to add it, right?

Regards,
Jens

P.S. Meanwhile, can anyone recommend me a (preferably
free) diffing tool that you can configure as an external
differ?

Yes please, I'd vote for that. Currently I use Araxis Merge (costs
money), but I like IDEA's diff tool better.
That reminds me that I should still try out SmartSynchronize from Thomas
Singers company. That's quite a bit cheaper and looks very nice.

Another great option for diffing is Beyond Compare. It also costs money, but must be the best money I've ever spent (besides Idea). For example: want to check what has changed between two jar-files? Open them in BC and it will

1. treat them as folders
2. decompile the class files to see the difference

And where to get it? Here: http://scootersoftware.com/

PS. I'm in no way affiliated with this company. Just loves the product

+10 I'm very stingy with dev software (generally try and get my company
to pay for everything), but I bought this one myself, years ago. Great compare
product.

You would think so, and it has been repeatedly asked for, but never seems to reach the top of the stack. Perhaps now that the JetBrains team has had to try managing three dev branches simultaneously they will better see the value of it.

+10 on BeyondCompare. Solid, dirt cheap, and very featureful. Should be in every developer's toolchain.

For those, who need a file/directory compare tool on non-Win32 platforms,
SmartSynchronize might be an option.
