Learning IntelliJ IDEA - Can I Use a New License on an Old Version?

Hello Everyone,

I'm very new to IntelliJ IDEA, and  I'd like to learn all of its features.  My company has licenses for  version 10.0.3, and also the Manning book "IntelliJ IDEA in Action", but  the book is several years old and several versions of IDEA behind, so  it's difficult to work through with my version.  I had the idea (no pun  intended) to download and install version 4.5.4 on my home PC and work  through the book with it, but I wasn't sure if I could use my work  license on the older version.  I suppose I could just go ahead and try  to see if it works, but I wanted to see if I could get any input here  first so that it might save me the hassle of having to immediately  uninstall it.  Any constructive input would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I'm not sure about the old license working or not... but you would get a 30 day trial on the version 4 installaion when you install it. Also, your company's 10.0.x license is good for 10.5.x as well; just so you know.

The license should be compatible, but I really don't recommend trying to use the old version today. Although there is no book covering the latest version, we provide plenty of help for learning its features. Start with reading through the tips of the day, then check out the screencasts at JetBrains.TV.
