Editor Column Mode

I am very much looking forward to 5.1 and Demetra.
IMHO 5.1 will be the release that 5.0 should have been - lot's of bugs fixed and lot's of
old features enhanced (earlier releases provided this already at *.03 version :) ).
And judging on the issues that JetBrainers themselves enter into Jira for new features,
Demetra will finally be a release with mature, usable features right from the start.
(Esp. somebody named Mikhail Gedzberg seemed to be testing new features a lot. Is he still
on holiday? I think someone should continue his work...)
Ok, ok, never mind, after all it's you business, not mine.

Anyway, here's another old feature that was never made usable enough: Column Mode Editing
There are about a dozen open bugs, some of them two years old (search Jira for "column AND mode").
I understand that it is not a major feature and many people do not use it at all, still
if it is worth doing, it's worth doing right.
For me it comes in handy every now and then, but almost every other time I get annoyed by
its limitations.

+1 your not the only user. A good example of a really nice implementation of column mode editing would be nedit http://www.nedit.org/ if you could make it that good it would be wonderful

I have to agree - column editing is one of those features that really comes in handy every now and then. Using column editing mode, you can do in seconds editing that would take minutes or even hours in a regular editor.

Sven - you misunderstood the point of my post. I know about the mode and I use it. I was giving personal testimony about its usefulness in the hope that it would convince the wonderful folks at JetBrains that they should fix the bugs.

Sorry, I didn't noticed those bugs.

I agree - column editing is amazingly useful ... occasionally. But on those occasions pretty much nothing else will do. Column editing mode should be done in exactly the same way as Textpad does it - really, really, simple. Hold down a key and select with the mouse and column editing is on, not what we have in IDEA.

Don't introduce any additional functionality which requires
the use of that evil mouse device. (Instead keep on working
on making IDEA usable with keyboard only.)

Moin Jens,
I think you missed the point. You can already use either mouse
or keyboard.
IMHO what Saqib requested was a modifier key that you can hold
to temporarily switch from regular selection to column selection.
(Instead of having different modes, that you have to switch on and off.)
I would also very much like that, the only problem is that there
simply are no keys left to use for this.
Maybe ship Idea with an additional USB keypad ;)

While, I agree that all actions should be accessible using only the keyboard, there are
those of us who actually like using the mouse instead of remembering the innumerable
shortcut key sequences. So everything, including any new functionality, should be
accessible with the mouse (with various modifiers: shift, alt, ctrl) as well.
