automatic native2ascii

Hey guys - how the heck do I drive this? I turned it on, but I keep
seeingly getting my properties files mucked up.

Is the "default encoding" what I want the raw ASCII converted to? i.e.
UTF-8 ( since I have \uxxxxxxx encodings for UTF-8 in the file )?

I just seemed to end up with a properties file that was messed up, and
looking at it with less from an xterm it looked as tho the properties
file included UTF-8 characters itself (and not \uxxxxx)....

Is something wrong, or am I just having a bad day prior to a deployment?

Actually, you should set it to ISO-8859-1, meaning that IDEA should encode the files that way. That option only exists because lots of people use a custom ResourceBundle implementation that reads property files in other encodings.

Or simply have the ant build convert the properties file just prior to creating a distribution.

I have to support Mark on this one.

I have tried with various combinations of System Default, US-ASCII, ISO-8859-1,ISO-8859-15 and UTF-8.

Most of these would load the property files correctly from disk and show the escaped characters as native.
However, when i save, the special characters are saved in various encodings, never escaped.

A pity, since it seems like a very useful fature.

Could you please be more specific, what encodings have you set, what
properties files you opened, with what results/your expectations ?
Better yet, open the JIRA request at the www.intellij.net/jira .
