Well when I switch back I can place the cursor and highlight a line, THEN
it locks up. I guess maybe the improvements made on the OS X version are
making the windows version seem slower on refocus?

Try use those VM options Marcus mentioned here in the newsgroups. At least
those rule on my win box.
As the matter of fact we've upgraded bundled installer to JDK 1.5 Update
5 (well, we'll think twice next time) which may cause differences in garbage
collector behavior.

I presume that chances of solving lockup issues for 3.0.x
are close to zero? ;) I experience the same problems with
it (see "3512: Still slow?") discussion).

not restart IDEA five times a day? Another JRE maybe?

I've gotten several lockups on Idea 5.0 and the EAP 5.02 RC. I'm talking
several in a single day.

What can I do to gather information used to fix this alarming problem?

Try to record several CPU snapshots and if it is not possible, a thread dump, taken while IDEA is locked, could help
