IDEA 5.0.1, OSX, Performance

Did 5.0.1's performance just tank in a major way? I just got back from
vacation, and either:
a) my brain is slow
b) idea slowed down in 5.0.1
c) it really was never fast and stepping away from it made me realize
how slow it was
d) all of the above.

I can take a cpu snapshot, but everything is slow so it's hard to target
something specific to let jetbrains know. Typing is slow, debugging is
slow, opening and closing panes is slow... it's all slow. This is not
in jsps either, this is straight up java code.

Good to know for once it's not OSX specific... and not my brain either.

Still it would be even better to fix it, which is impossible without CPU
snapshot, right?:)

Indeed... but snapshot of what??? You want me to just work in there and
send you a random snapshot?

If you say that you experience slowdown with java, then I personally would
prefer dealing with this. Practically anything will do as long as you
describe
what you were doing.

BTW, 5.0.1 runs faster for me than 5.0;
just a guess: could it be you perforce server that is polled and slows down
IDEA?

I am using cvs and FC3. This is what I am doing
open a file about 300 lines
scroll to some position in the file
sout-tab-start typing the message
the message does not show on the screen for about 5 mins
after that the idea is fine
I can keep on repeating this again and again.

Huh? I don't use Perforce. This is simply hitting delete, it takes a
couple of seconds to delete a word.

What's the parameter I need to pass to enable profiling again?

Just another wild guess: could it be that IDEA now parses/does more in
the background?
See the message and code I posted a few days ago:
this trivial project --> 100% CPU

Parsing project on startup taking much longer. I normally do not get tip
window on small project load only on large ones. Now I do even on a tiny
ones.

Did you check the little project I posted ("this trivial project -->
100% CPU ")?
It took me some time - and the activity monitor - to figure out that
IDEA was eating all my resources, in a fresh 2-class project.

Alain,
I do not see any problem with your project; it works like a charm to me.

Do you mean -Xrunyjpagent:port=10100 ?

If you're running Idea under 5.0, better is
-agentlib:yjpagent=port=10100
(it uses JVMTI instead of JVMPI)

Why is that better? It seems slower to me.

Not for OS X

I just know that JVMTI is supposed to be more scalable and the YourKit
guys recommend using it instead of JVMPI.

Yes and it's supposed to give you a lot more details as well... but not
for OSX, not until version 5.0 of YourKit.

There's an EAP version of 4.5 available which is supposed to have it.

I just tried with the new build, and it's a snail.

What I did
- install new build (changed heap to 64-300)
- open the project downloaded from this forum
- open the 2 classes
- click in MyIntroPage.java
- press Enter to insert a line

=> it took 5-10 seconds for IDEA to ack my request and insert a line.

Then I left it alone a few minutes, tried again, and it was fine (fast).
.. till IDEA lost the focus/till I selected another application (the
App. monitor) => IDEA was at 80+%

=> I clicked back in the class editor, but it took IDEA a good 5-10
seconds to ack my action and be responsive again.

I've never noticed that problem, except with this very project. I think
it's worth you give it a second look, on MacOS X.

Alain I can reproduce this exact behavior in ALL my projects, especially
after I unfocus and refocus idea.

I need to find some time to get a snapshot.

The problem is that jetbrains might not see it with their dual G5. I
suggest you guys go sneak that PowerBook again and take a look at it
there.
