Keyboard support for closing windows

Hi,

I apologise if this is already raised. I sometimes don't have much luck with searches in these forums. :(

I'm trying IDEA 3417 on Windows XP.

With IDEA 4.5, I can press Ctrl-F4 to close an editor window, even if the focus out of the window, e.g. in the Project toolbar, or the CVS output area. This is really useful. With IDEA 3417 it doesn't seem to work any more -- I have to put the focus back into the editor window to close it.

With IDEA 4.5, I can press Alt-F U to invoke "Close All Editors but Active". Now these commands have moved into the Window menu. When I press Alt-W, then U, instead of invoking a command with mnemonic "U" in the Window menu, IDEA opens the Run menu. This behavior with drop down menus first appeared in IDEA 4 or 4.5, I think. Why does it do this?

The second problem with Alt-W U is that there are three commands in the Window menu with mnemonic U:
Store Current Layout as Default
Close All Editors But Active
Close All Unmodified Editors

Perhaps the mnemonics could be reassigned to avoid (or reduce) duplication?

BTW if you haven't guessed it, I'm one of those users who doesn't like to reach around and find my mouse to do everything. I really like it when I can get fast access to commands with the keyboard.

Regards
John Hurst

Ctrl+F4 was intentionally disabled when out of editor focus since it is unclear
what editor should be closed in precense of multiple tab groups.
OTOH you can work that around with a few more keystrokes namely Esc, Ctrl+F4,
.

Mnemonics will be corrected.

I submitted this issue for the first mnemonic problem:

Maxim,

Thanks for your reply. I see what you mean with multiple tab groups.

I guess I use multiple tab groups occasionally, but not often. In fact one thing that discouraged me from using them more is that I had to use the mouse ... but I have just discovered Ctrl-Tab thanks to new items in the Window menu -- and it works in 4.5 too! Thanks! I think I like the new Window menu.

It does seem as though Ctrl-F4 could work unambiguously if there is only one tab group ... maybe that's being unreasonable though. One of the big strengths of IDEA is great keyboard support -- you (almost always) feel that you don't have to press any more keys than should ne necessary. Compared to certain other tools, which shall be nameless ;)

Where the focus is placed when pressing ESC?

Into which editor, when there are multiple tab groups?

OK, so why don't you close the last accessed editor tab when pressing
CtrlF4, just like you would click ESC followed by CtrlF4?

If I'd apply same logic further: why characters aren't typed into last selected
editor while I'm in the project view? :)

Maxim, I'm very serious on this issue. Why one needs to press ESC now before
being able to press Ctrl+F4? It is annoying behaviour at the moment,
especially since I don't use splitted tabs 99% of the time.

+1

Working further with IDEA 5 yesterday, I do find I miss the old Ctrl-F4. Tom's idea sounds good to me.

Hi,

I just noticed that with 3425, the Ctrl-F4 behaviour is fixed. It's working great now, just the way I want it.

THANKS! I appreciate this.
