Possible to open single .java files from Window's Explorer?

When trying to open a single .java file from Window's Explorer, I get the below error message.

When I try to open the same file through an open instance of Intellij it will do just fine.

Why is this happening? How to fix it?

Thanks

Hello Jorge,

IntelliJ IDEA isn't capable of editing individual Java files; in order for
its functionality to work, it needs to have a configured project (JDK in
particular). This behavior is by design; there's no way to fix it in the
current version.

Well, that's a shame :(

It should be possible to at least let me see the file and write to it. I understand that a lot (probably most) of the capabilities Intellij provides us can only be made by having all the files of the project, but it would be interesting to at least let us open a file and do simple syntax highlighting.

Hi, Jorge.
I believe in this case the right tool to use is a lightweight syntax aware editor, like Notepad++, Editplus, etc. If you need to view adhoc file, text eidtor starts faster, has label in context menu, highlights syntax, etc. If you don't need context awarenes/intelligence idea provides, most probably you'll get no benifits opening file in idea.
