Why not recommended

On the appearance dialog there is an option to override the default fonts, but it says "not recommended" (unless using the idea 4.5 lnf). It seems to work. Why is this not recommended?

It may cause visual glitches like controls overlap each other or spaces between
controls are wrong or something is missaligned. Worse, under some LaFs it
appears like caret shows wrong position in JTextFields so actual typings
happen not where you'd expect it to happen.

How could that happen? I'm sure you are using layout managers, which take
the minimum/preferred size of components into account, which is dependent
from the font size.

The problems that he mentions did happen. Initially JetBrains decided to fisx this by taking away the ability to change fonts under the Aqua look and feel. This really screwed me because the only fint they allowed was so small on my cinema display that It was unreadable.

Thank you again JetBrains for giving me the option of putting up with the visual glitches so that I can use a font that is readable. BTW, I have not seen the visual glitches like caret in the wrong location for quite a while now. They seemed to have disappear after I applied one of Apple's Software updates that included a Java update.
