IDEA X

I'm used to hold Ctrl+F4 to close all editor windows. With IDEA X this also
closes the tool windows which IDEA 8 did not. How to prevent that?

By default:

  • Ctrl+F4 closes only the current editor window.
  • The Close All Editor Windows action does not have a keyboard shortcut mapped to it.
  • Hide all tool windows is mapped to Ctrl+Shift+F12.

It sounds like you might have some custom keyboard shortcut mappings set up, and there are some conflicts. That would be my guess. Try setting the Keyboard map to use to "Default" and see if it the problem goes away. If it does, I'd look through the custom one you were using to flush out the problems.

Right. Hence I hold it to close all editor windows. Unfortunately, IDEA X
also closes open tool windows after the last editor window. This was not the
case in IDEA 8.

Sorry, I didn't catch that you had said "hold" in your original post. Have you thought about simply mapping a shortcut to the "Close all" (windows) action and using that when you want to cloe all windows?
